The
Mediterranean offers many fish species catchable with fly fishing tackle.
Some are common and readily available
and we have just developed effective fishing tactics for them. Others
are waiting for some experimentation in the right spots and moments.
Fishing from land the group bass-leerfish-bluefish
is a true Mediterranean grand slam: three fish growing to large size and
ready to take flies. In some spots we just have the new opportunity
of Mediterranean Barracuda abundance. Other species lke garfish, palometa,
scad, saddled bream, turbot can be good fly rod targets.
From
the boat, many other species are available, small ones like mackerel, scad
and juvenile pelagics, and large ones like amberjack and tunas.
Offshore we have, among the others, various
tuna species, the abundant frigate mackerel (bullet tuna) and the strong
bluefins, the little tunny and the albacore. Then the wonderful dolphin
fish, the bonito, and our great billfishes: the broadbill swordfish and
the Mediterranean Sprearfis, both aboundant in various south Med destinations.
In and off shore many species that are
not usually fished can become good fly fishing targets. Fish like
bream, striped bream, croaker are catchable with flies. Successful and
consistent fishing for those species will largely depend on the development
of effective techniques and the discovery of good fishing spots.

Every
fish whose food sources we could effectively imitate with artificials and
to whom those imitations could be effectively presented are catchable with
fly fishing tackle.

The list is long and the results will grow
with the diffusions of fishing experiences in our sea..
