Books have always been treasures for those who think, but with today's politically correct public educational system that spans kindergarten to high school, and (with only a few exceptions) the indoctrinating institutions known as universities, they are even more important for anyone desiring to develop independent and critical thinking. Teachers at all levels often have agendas having nothing to have anything to do with the subject being taught, and many college courses -- including gender or women's "studies" are nothing more than group identity labs.
