Boxing announcer Mark Beiro has called scores of professional and amateur fights in his career, but he refuses to be ringside at Toughman bouts. The competitions, pitting inexperienced fighters against each other in unregulated bouts, billed as brawling for fun, appeal to the uncaged savage in all of us, he said. Toughman loosens about every restriction that boxing currently has and makes it that much more dangerous, said Beiro, one of the nation s best known boxing announcers. Personally, I am surprised more people haven t been permanently injured or killed in it. Criticism of the events flared up again last week when a 30-year-old mother of two died after entering a Toughman competition in Sarasota. She was the 10th contestant to die in the 24-year history of Toughman. In a statement, competition founder and promoter Al Dore denied that the events are dangerous, and he billed them as safer than conventional professional and amateur boxing. After the woman s death, though, Dore temporarily halted the traveling show.Sarasota police are investigating whether a crime was committed when Stacy Young, who had never boxed before, was pummeled by a woman who appeared to have more exper

Google is on a mission to pinpoint the genetic causes of autism. The company is using its cloud-based genom
vaso stanley e database, Google Genomics, to sequence genomes from 10,000 people on the autism spectrum, along with their family members. The plan is to host and index the genomes so that researchers can look for the genetic origins of the developmental disorder. Wired interviewed people involved with the project: David Glazer, director of engineering for Google Genomics and formerly director of engineering for Google Plus, says that instead of searching for keywords, researchers can search for particular regions and sequences along genomes and find sections with common variations. And because a single human genome can run to 100 gigabytes, having the data in a central location makes remote collaboration among researchers easier. You ;re a lot more efficient than shipping around station wagons full of hard drives, Glazer says. This project is a partnership with Autism Speaks, helping the non-profit organize the genetic information
stanley quencher it has cataloged for years. Google has a unique capability here to use its immense cloud storage powers for good; even though the cost of sequencing DNA has gone down, finding ways to share the terabytes of data associated with the information has been a hurdle for researchers. This is just one of many projects Google is working on with health. Larry Page talked about how data-mining health records could save lives this past sum
